Questions

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default since iOS 11. It makes smaller files than JPG, but many Windows computers, Android phones, and websites cannot open it.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser, so your photos are converted on your own device and never sent anywhere. That matters for personal photos, which often contain faces, homes, and locations.

Will I lose quality?

At 90% quality the JPG looks the same as the original to the eye. Choose PNG if you need a lossless copy, though the file will be much larger.

Can I convert JPG to HEIC?

Not in the browser. Creating HEIC files needs an HEVC video encoder that browsers do not include. If you want small, modern image files, convert to AVIF or WebP instead: they are as efficient as HEIC and open in all current browsers.

How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?

Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, which is what this tool is for.
